Margaret T. Hilton, 87, wife of the late Frank Hilton, died Feb. 18, 2010, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center-Bodwell in Brunswick.

She was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Milford, N.H., to the late James and Mary Troup. She moved to Tenants Harbor at a young age, where she graduated from St. George High School. She started her lifelong career in communications as the one-person switchboard operator in Tenants Harbor, sleeping on a cot for night service. Margaret worked as an operator in Rockland, as a supervisor in Bath, rising to chief operator in Boothbay, and later in Portland, achieving dial service administrator for all of southern Maine.

Margaret retired after serving 14 years as Jasper N. Keller Chapter Telephone Pioneer Administrator for the state of Maine. A caring and charitable person, she was an active volunteer with the Special Olympics games, a member of the Heritage Circle of the Mid Coast Hospital, a 55 Plus Center volunteer, a Mid Coast Hospital Life Line volunteer and many others. She enjoyed camping and boating and was a member of the Downeast Yacht Club.

She is survived by a brother, James B. Troup and his wife, Doris, of Camden; a sister, Agnes Souza and her husband, Robert, of Carolina, R.I.; a stepson, Frank Hilton and his wife, Lee, of Harpswell; a stepdaughter-in-law, Judy Hilton of Pownal; a brother, Fred Hilton and his wife, Phylis, of York; four grandchildren; and several close nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a stepson, Bruce Hilton.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St. in Brunswick, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial beside her husband will be held in the spring at the Old Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery on Civic Center Drive in Augusta.
