Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Feb. 19 apprehended a 39-year-old man who is a suspect in a serious assault that allegedly occurred Feb. 16 in Union.

Sheriff Donna Dennison said Harlan MacKenzie is being charged with elevated aggravated assault, terrorizing, theft and obstructing the report of a crime.

Dennison said tips generated from the news story and photo of MacKenzie posted Feb. 18 online on VillageSoup helped lead to his capture.

Details of the capture were not immediately available but one source said there was a foot chase in Warren.

The victim was a friend of the suspect, Dennison said. The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken first to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport and then to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

A wallet and some other items were taken in the theft, Dennison said.

The sheriff’s office also responded to another aggravated assault complaint this week.

On Feb. 17, shortly after 9 p.m., Deputy Larry Hesseltine arrested Tyler Philbrook, 21, of Vinalhaven and charged him with aggravated assault, domestic assault, disorderly conduct and criminal threatening.

Philbrook was taken to the mainland by the U.S. Coast Guard and then to the Knox County Jail in Rockland. Philbrook’s bail was set at $2,000 cash.

Hesseltine’s report indicated that one victim had blood around his eyes and mouth and a chipped tooth, the sheriff said. She said the second victim — a female — had a bump on her head.
The sheriff said intoxication appeared to be a contributing factor.
