Frederick G. Demers Sr., 93, died peacefully Feb. 8, 2010, at the Owls Head Homestead, where he had resided several years.

Born in Bucksport on June 7, 1916, he was the son of Charles M. and Mabel Gould Demers. Fred grew up in Winslow, where he attended local schools and graduated from Winslow High School. He was a graduate of Colby College in Waterville and a 1944 graduate of John Marshall School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio.  

A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the war as purchasing officer aboard a destroyer in the Pacific, and until 1946 served on a mine sweeper.

Throughout his career, Fred resided in numerous places throughout the world.

He is survived by one son, Frederick G. Demers Jr. and his wife, Barbara Swain, of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Sydney D. Radka and her husband, Roger E., of Syracuse, N.Y., and Florence D. Donovan of Canaan; six grandchildren, Kristen vonSeggern, Shannon Donovan, Heather Donovan, Ben Demers, Peter Demers and Bill Donovan; as well as one great-grandchild, Maxwell Bowden.

Fred’s family wishes to thank the staff of the Homestead for the wonderful care and love extended to their father over many years.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring at the Howard Cemetery in Winslow.
