The Personal Book Shop, 78 Main St./Route 1, will host a book signing by local author Ilga Winicov Harrington Saturday, Feb. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Harrington wrote “How to Eat Healthy and Well for Less than $5.00 a Day” as a roadmap and a toolbox for anyone who wishes to take charge of controlling their food budget while maintaining a healthy diet. Her book focuses on cooking with basic and natural ingredients to provide three delicious meals a day for an individual or the family. The basic approach starts with a minimal kitchen containing only salt and pepper. During a four-week period of judicious planning and careful shopping, the kitchen is stocked with staples for current and future use. The plan is based on a monthly budget of less than $5 a day per person.

Each week has complete menus and shopping lists, with Maine supermarket prices for the purchased items. A complete list of recipes is provided for all the menus. The thrifty food plan takes into account constraints of time and experience in the kitchen and is designed to be approachable by the beginner cook. To see excerpts from the book, visit

Harrington, a retired professor of microbiology and biochemistry with lifelong interest in food and nutrition, lives in Waldoboro and writes the “Thrifty Good Food” column for The Lincoln County News.
