An arrest or summons does not constitute a finding of guilt. An individual charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at criminal proceedings.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6.

Jan. 31

Sgt. Jacob Boyington responded to assist Waldo County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the scene of a motor vehicle crash in Searsmont. This incident involved a vehicle rollover with all occupants fleeing the scene. Once the Waldo units arrived, they assumed the case.

Deputy Robert Potter conducted a radar detail in Union. No violations were noted.

Sgt. Michael Sprague handled a motor vehicle crash on North Haven involving a single vehicle striking a deer. Nonreportable damage was sustained.

Deputy Matt Elwell responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Appleton involving a single vehicle whose operator lost control on the snow covered roadways and struck a utility pole. The vehicle was deemed totaled and there was $300 worth of damage to the pole. No injuries were noted and the key factor in this crash was imprudent speed, for which the operator was issued a summons.

Feb. 1

Deputy John Palmer began an investigation of a theft in Cushing. This is still an active investigation.

Deputy Palmer began an investigation of a burglary in Warren. This is still an active investigation.

Deputy Doug Brundrett arrested Kara Salo, 24, of Thomaston on an outstanding warrant. She was taken to the Knox County Jail without incident.

Feb. 2

Deputy Mark Tibbetts began an investigation of threatening in Hope. This is an ongoing investigation and all information has been turned over to the initial investigating officer.

Deputy Tibbetts began a fraudulent documents investigation in Union. This is still an active investigation.

Deputy Elwell arrested Edwin Ecker, 62, of Waldoboro for violating a protection order.

Deputies Brundrett and Palmer responded to a report of a motor vehicle fire in Warren. The vehicle was a total loss and no injuries were sustained.

Deputy Brundrett began an investigation of threatening in Warren. This is still an active investigation with possible charges pending.

Sgt. Sprague arrested Chris Harvey, 25, of Union on an outstanding warrant along with violating a condition of release. The suspect was taken to the Knox County Jail without incident.

Feb. 3

Deputy Brundrett responded to the scene of a motor vehicle crash in Rockport to assist with traffic control.

Deputy Tibbetts responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Appleton involving a single vehicle whose operator lost control on the snow covered roadway. The vehicle struck a snowbank and flipped onto its roof, causing a reportable amount of damage. No injuries were noted.

Sgt. Boyington responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Cushing involving a single vehicle whose operator lost control due to the snow covered roadway, causing the vehicle to roll onto its side. Reportable damage was sustained and the operator was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport by Cushing ambulance for complaint of head pain.

Feb. 4

Deputy Potter responded to a report of a domestic incident in Warren. This was deemed a verbal argument only.

Deputy Potter responded to a disorderly complaint in Warren involving two adult females. After all parties involved were spoken to, it was decided that no charges would be sought by either party.

Deputies Potter and Tibbetts responded to a report of a domestic incident in Warren. This incident involved a verbal argument only and the male subject left the residence.

Feb. 5

Deputy Potter responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in South Thomaston. This incident involved a vehicle whose operator attempted to stop but due to the icy surface, slid into an ice machine at Hoggy’s Store. Reportable damage was sustained.

Deputy Brundrett began an investigation of threatening in Washington. The suspect in this case was located and was issued a warning on threatening, along with a trespass warning.

Deputy Brundrett responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Union involving a single vehicle striking a gate while trying to make a turn. Reportable damage was sustained.

Deputy Donald Murray responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Warren involving two vehicles. Reportable damage was sustained with injuries noted.

Subsequent to a traffic stop in Warren, Deputy Elwell arrested Samuel Merrifield, 23, of Cushing on a charge of operating under the influence. The subject was transported to the Knox County Jail without incident.

Deputies Elwell and Sgt. Boyington responded to a report of an assault in Friendship. This is still an active investigation with several suspects who have not yet been located.

Feb. 6

Deputy Murray responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Appleton involving a single vehicle that struck a utility pole. Further details were not available.

Deputy Murray arrested Benjamin Clark, 19, of, Appleton for OUI.

Deputy Murray responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in Union involving a single vehicle striking a utility pole. Reportable damage was sustained with no injuries noted.

Sgt. Boyington began an investigation of a theft and burglary in Friendship. This is still an active investigation.

In total this week, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office received 184 calls for service. Those calls not listed above involved such things as all-terrain vehicle problems, alarms, 911 hang-ups, and nuisance, erratic vehicle and suspicious complaints.
