A 43-year-old Owls Head man was arrested Feb. 8 following a case in which police said he was “burning his tires” so excessively that his pickup truck caught fire and the fire then spread to a commercial garage.

Lance McLain was arrested and charged with operating under the influence and violating a condition of release, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire that was called in shortly before 7 p.m. on Feb. 8. No determination has been made on whether there will be a charge for the fire that destroyed the Island Auto building in South Thomaston, the sheriff said.

McLain’s truck was also destroyed. The efforts of the South Thomaston Fire Department and of mutual aid assistance from Rockland, Owls Head, St. George and Thomaston helped to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby boat yard. The Sea Store is also located across from the garage on Island Road.

Firefighters were able to push one car out of the garage and drive another one out before the fire consumed the building.

Crews remained at the scene until 11 p.m. on Feb. 8 and shuttled 13,000 gallons of water to the scene, according to South Thomaston Fire Chief Bryan Calderwood.
