Louise Kirk Thomas, 82, died Feb. 10, 2010, at EPOCH Senior Healthcare Center in Melrose, Mass.

Born in Machias on Feb. 1, 1928, she was the daughter of Herbert A. and Persis Tupper Kirk. At the age of 13, Louise moved with her parents and siblings to Rockland. She attended local schools and was a 1947 graduate of Rockland High School.

On Oct. 23, 1949, she married James “Jim” Leroy Thomas in Rockland. During the first years of their marriage, Louise worked in the local telephone office and with Van Baalen’s in Rockland. After the birth of the couple’s daughter, Tina Louise, she devoted herself as a full-time mother and homemaker. The family lived in Rockland until 1967, when they moved to Owls Head.

A member of Rockland Congregational Church, Louise worked many years as a dedicated volunteer for many church organizations. She attended numerous Masonic events with her husband who was a 33rd degree Mason. The couple spent many happy hours in Jim’s lobsterboat and walking along the shore near their home collecting seaglass. Jim died in 2001.

Louise was an excellent cook, an ardent Red Sox Fan, and a skilled crafter. She created beautiful cross-stitch pieces and plastic canvas rainbows, which she gave to hundreds of people, friends and strangers alike. In 2007 she moved to Windward Gardens Assisted Living in Camden, where she participated in many activities and continued her daily walks as long as she was able. In August 2008, Louise moved to EPOCH Senior Healthcare in Melrose, Mass., to be near her daughter. She made numerous friends throughout the facility, and had three friends she dined with every day. She looked forward to the daily activities programs. The nurses, aides and kitchen staff thoroughly enjoyed Louise, and in turn she was always appreciative of the excellent care she received at EPOCH.

Other than her father, mother and husband, Louise was predeceased by two brothers, James Kirk of Virginia and Richard Kirk of Rockland.

She is survived by her daughter, Tina Thomas Smith and her husband, Donald, of Melrose, Mass.; two sisters, Evelyn K. Holman of Florida and Rockland and Celia T. Kirk of Thomaston; a nephew, William A. Kirk and his wife, Sally, and their sons, Jason and Justin Kirk, all of Rockland; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock St. in Rockland. The Rev. Seth D. Jones will officiate. Spring interment will be in Village Cemetery in South Thomaston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Activities Fund, EPOCH of Melrose, 15 Green St., Melrose, MA 02176, where Louise enjoyed many happy times.
