John R. Ruppert, 77, of Edgecomb died the morning of Feb. 10, 2010, at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. Born May 4, 1932, he was the son of John and Mary (Barna) Ruppert.

John grew up in New Jersey where he attended and graduated from local schools there. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served aboard a destroyer during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

In 1956 he married Alice Shirley Baluk. The couple would move throughout the Northeast as John worked as an electrical engineer for various companies in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. In 1973 they started building their home in Edgecomb and the couple moved to that house full time in 1979. John continued working and eventually retired from Central Maine Power in 1997.

John had a lifelong love of photography as well as sailing. He and his wife had a boat of some sort wherever they lived. In recent years he took up golf, which he enjoyed very much.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ruppert of Edgecomb; two sons, John and his wife, Rebecca, of Brunswick and Mark of Freeport; two grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica, both of Waldoboro; one brother, Robert of New Jersey; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

At John’s request, there will be no services.
