Joel T. McMurray, 51, died unexpectedly Feb. 9, 2010, as a result of an all-terrain vehicle accident on Barrett Hill Road.

Born in Whitinsville, Mass., on July 9, 1958, he was the son of Thomas and Genevieve Gibbons McMurray.

He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in Uxbridge and graduated from Mt. St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, R.I., in 1976. He then attended St. Francis College (now UNE) in Biddeford, graduating with honors in 1980, having earned a bachelor of arts degree.

Joel’s love of the water was born from spending summers on Cape Cod. From 1980 to 1983 he ran the Biddeford Yacht Club, and in 1984 began employment with the U.S. Department of Commerce as a seafood inspector. He first served in Gloucester, Mass., and then Rockland, working many years at National Sea Products.

Because he enjoyed helping others, he then became self-employed in property management, assisting many people in the care of their homes and cottages.

A great athlete who was fun to be around, Joel enjoyed all sports and played most of them. He eagerly shared the outdoors with everyone, especially his favorite pastimes: fishing, hunting, boating, ATVing and ice fishing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great storyteller. Making the best of what he had, Joel was a loving son, father and friend to all.

He always had a dog and loved his most recent pets, Wayne and Samantha.

Besides his parents of Uxbridge, Joel is survived by his son, James M. McMurray of Union; his brother, Jerome H. McMurray of Bristol, R.I.; two sisters, Jean G. McMurray of Whitinsville, Mass., and Julie B. McMurray of Uxbridge, Mass.; and one niece, Neve E. Palmieri of Uxbridge. Joel was beloved by his family, his aunt and uncle, many cousins, and friends.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 150 Broadway in Rockland. The Rev. Robert Cleveland will officiate. A memorial Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Uxbridge, Mass., will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Knox County, P. O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
