Knox County Republicans to host Abbott

ROCKLAND — The Knox County Republicans will hold their monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Trade Winds Motor Inn, 2 Park Drive in Rockland. They will host Steve Abbott, former chief of staff to Sen. Susan Collins, a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor. The meeting will be preceded by a meet and greet at 6:30 p.m.

Abbott was born and raised in Maine; he comes from a family with Maine roots that date back to the 1700s. Abbott grew up in Orono and currently resides in Portland with his wife, Amy, and their two children. A 1981 graduate of Orono High School, Abbott went on to Harvard College where he majored in history. He graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1991. Abbott’s record of athletic and academic accomplishments include the Orono High School Hall of Fame, the Harvard Varsity Club and the Maine Law Review.

Abbott served Gov. John McKernan and Sen. Olympia Snowe, and after law school he worked at Pierce Atwood, Maine’s largest law firm. For the past 12 years, Abbott has served as chief of staff to Collins. Widely respected for his strategic skills and knowledge of Maine, Abbott served as campaign manager for Collins’ successful re-election campaigns in 2002 and 2008.

Abbott lives in Portland with his wife, Amy, and their two children, 9-year-old Hannah and 5-year-old Henry. Abbott and his wife are active in their children’s recreational and school communities. Abbott has coached many of Hannah’s sports teams. Amy, a Bates College alum who did her graduate studies at University of Southern Maine, set aside her 15-year career as an executive with UNUM to raise their children and become an active member of Portland’s Hall School Parent Teacher Organization.

Steve and Amy enjoy the woods and water and can frequently be found at the Abbott family’s hunting camp in Rumford or at Amy’s family camp in Surry. Steve enjoys hunting, fishing and camping in the Maine outdoors with his family and friends.

In addition to hearing from Abbott, the group will finalize plans for the 2010 municipal caucuses and county convention. As always, all Knox County residents are invited to attend. This is a prime opportunity for people to make their concerns known. For more information, visit or call 594-5118.
