Frances Arnold Bowden, 82, a longtime educator and resident of Old Augusta Road and formerly of Pennsylvania, died Jan. 19, 2010, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport after a period of failing health.

Frances was born May 12, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C., the daughter of David Timon and Orion E. Arnold Bowden. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Women’s College of University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master’s degree in fine arts from the Woman’s College of North Carolina in 1956.

As an assistant professor, she taught at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., and was later promoted to a full professor. In 1967 she joined Temple University in Philadelphia, from which she retired as professor of dance in 1992.

She enjoyed gardening and cooking, taking adult continuing education classes and caring for her beloved pets. She belonged to the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution.

Frances is survived by her cousin, Frances Rosalyn Brown of Athens, Ga.; her nieces, Elizabeth Arnold Little of Pensacola, Fla., Cynthia Elaine Fillmann of York, Nancy Madelaine Dodson of Coronado, Calif., and Frances Penelope Price of Pensacola, Fla.; and her nephew, Boykin Robinson Dodson of Huntsville, Ala.

A private service is planned for the spring.
