“Isn’t It Romantic? A Musical Valentine,” featuring songs about love from Broadway and beyond, will be presented as a 2 p.m. Valentine’s Day matinee at Waldoboro’s Waldo Theatre, Main Street/Route 220. The show also will be presented in a gala dessert buffet format Friday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. at Bristol’s 1812 Farm. Both shows will benefit Heartwood Regional Theater Company.

When musical stage veterans Nancy Durgin and John Adams first performed together in Heartwood Regional Theater Company’s production of “Sweeney Todd,” they knew immediately they had a special chemistry. After that highly-acclaimed 2007 run, they did not share the stage again until Heartwood’s wild and wacky touring production of “Das Barbecü” last summer. By then, the two had become fast friends and mutual admirers.

It was backstage at performances of “Das Barbecü” that they decided to stage their own show, simply for the sheer enjoyment of it. Pianist Sean Fleming led the orchestra for “Das Barbecü,” and Durgin whispered an invitation to him from the wings. His response was an immediate “Sure!”

So was born the idea for a musical revue featuring Durgin, Adams and Fleming, backed by “Das Barbecü” band members Chuck McGregor on bass and Allen Millett on drums. The target date was Valentine’s Day, so the theme had to be love. As the show took shape, the team decided they wanted others to benefit from this extraordinary occasion and agreed that their performances could support the organization which brought them all together, Heartwood Regional Theater Company.

“Isn’t It Romantic?” features music by Irving Berlin, Rogers & Hart, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Frank Loesser and Stephen Sondheim, among others. Audiences will enjoy well-loved tunes, but also will be treated to many surprises. Several interludes by the polished instrumental trio will be an invitation to dance with the one you love.

Both presentations offer a Valentine’s discounted “two-fer” ticket price for couples. Tickets for the 1812 Farm are $40, $75 per couple. For the Valentine’s Day matinee concert in the Waldo Theatre, they are $15, $25 per couple. Reservations are strongly encouraged, especially for the Friday evening gala, available only through Heartwood at 563-1373 or heartwoodrtc@roadrunner.com.
