The air was crisp and cold and the sun shone brightly for most of the weekend, making for perfect conditions for outdoor fun and a historic celebration.

Many of the hundreds of event goers even paid tribute to the anniversary by lying on a wooden sled and gliding at high speeds down an iced 400-foot wooden chute before barreling across a frozen pond. And most did all that wearing hilarious costumes and sporting the most humorous team names.

Such is life in early February at the U.S. National Toboggan Championships held over weekend at the Camden Snow Bowl. The event celebrated its 20th year in style, which included holding two-, three- and four-person toboggan runs on Saturday and Sunday. The first day was capped by fireworks Saturday night in Camden.

This year’s toboggan event, which included about 400 teams, continued Sunday with the second qualifying runs for the four-person sleds — those participants took only one run Saturday — and then the championship rounds for the two-, three- and four-person divisions.

When all the runs were taken during the two days of intense racing, Redneck Racers were the four-person champs with runs of 8.693 and 8.694 seconds for a total time of 17.387 seconds. They beat out second-place Quatro Dermis (8.696 and 8.709 for 17.405 seconds) and third-place Internal Bleeding (8.664 and 8.746 for 17.410 seconds).

In the two-person division (a correction from previously published information), Kansas City Connection finished first with runs of 8.613 and 8.843 for 17.456 seconds, while Rat Rod Slider (8.718 and 8.901 for 17.619 seconds) was second and Valley Kingdom Chuters (8.778 and 8.853 for 17.631 seconds) third.

In the three-person division, Medical Miracles took home the championship with runs of 8.579 and 8.784 for a total of 17.363 seconds. The Miracles beat out second-place Throbbin Boggin 3 (8.734 and 8.814 for 17.548 seconds) and third-place Half Ton Run Minus One (8.726 and 8.865 for 17.591 seconds).

In the children’s division, the top teams were: 1, Triple Threat, 8.929 (single best run); 2, Webelo Warriors I, 9.059; and 3, Fuzzy Kittens of Doom, 9.083.

High school team — 1, C-School You Later (The Community School).

Special awards went to Cy’s Gang, with an average age of 73; and the best costume went to Royal Dutch National Toboggan Team.

The top 30 teams in each division advanced to Sunday’s championship races. Sunday also saw many of the overall champions from the previous 19 years return for a special race to crown the champion for the initial 20 years of the event.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the toboggan championships, this year’s event was to include a race to determine a new reigning world champion four-person team. The first world toboggan championship race was held in 2005 to commemorate the event’s 15th anniversary. All four-person first-place teams from the past 19 years were invited for a one-run, winner-take-all runoff Sunday, at the conclusion of the races.

Teams that were expected to compete in a 2010 world championship runoff were: The Nads (1991), The Knoxers (1992), Throbbin’ Boggins (1993), Big Kahoonas (1994, 1995, 2005, reigning world toboggan champions), Slab City Sliders (1996 and 1997), Thrill Seeking Patriots (1998), Beefy Boys (1999), Head of the Boards (2000), Quatro Dermis (2001), Foul Wind (2002) and Vertically Inclined (2003).

Internal Bleeding, the 2009 four-person champs, finished first overall in this special runoff with a one run time of 8.760 seconds. Internal Bleeding now can call themselves 2010 World Champions.

The U.S. National Toboggan Championships are open to two-, three- and four-person teams riding traditionally shaped wood toboggans that drop onto the 400-foot-long, 70-foot-high, ice-filled chute reaching speeds of up to 40 mph before sliding across frozen Hosmer Pond.

The U.S. National Toboggan Championships are the only organized wooden toboggan races in the country and perhaps the world. Each February, racers of all ages and abilities from around the country compete for the coveted honor of U.S. National Champion, with all race proceeds benefiting local youth activities and the Camden Snow Bowl.
