Ernestine Marie Knowlton, 86, died Feb. 2, 2010, at Windward Gardens in Camden.

Born in Appleton on Dec. 5, 1923, she was the daughter of Aubrey L. and Claribel (Chaples) Fuller. She grew up in Appleton and was a graduate of Appleton High School. As a young child, she developed an interest in horses. During the off-season months, she cared for, rode, and eventually became the owner of one of the horses from the Alford Lake Camp in Hope. In 1947 she married Sylvan R. Knowlton and they enjoyed many happy years together living in the Millville section of Camden. For 19 years they spent the winter months in Pompano Beach where Mrs. Knowlton worked as a chamber maid.

Mrs. Knowlton’s employment included working at the Seabright Mill and as a seamstress at the Castro Walsh Company, a cook at the Whitehall Inn in Camden, and a sardine packer at Holmes Packing Company in Rockland.

She enjoyed living independently and being a good neighbor. She diligently walked more than a mile every day. Each Christmas she thoughtfully knit a new pair of mittens for all members of her family.

She is survived by her beloved dog, Dixie; one brother, Robert L. Fuller of Rochester, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Kennedy and her husband, Robert, of Lincolnville and Alena Pennington of Appleton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sylvan R. Knowlton, who died Feb. 3, 1991; her brothers and sisters, Eleanor Fuller, Walter A. Fuller, Clara Elizabeth Tripp, James A. Fuller and Maurice E. Fuller; and two brothers-in-law, Douglass Pennington Sr. and Dwinal Tripp Sr.

Visitation will be held 2 to 3 p.m. with a service at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St. in Camden. The Rev. Mark Stockwell will officiate. Spring burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in Camden.
