Icy road conditions and gusting winds contributed to a head-on collision Jan. 29 on Old County Road in Thomaston.

Mike Cole, 39, of Thomaston was driving a 2005 red Chevy Cavalier south on Old County Road when the car began to slip in some packed snow on an S-curve near West Meadow Road, according to Sgt. Mike Janczura of the Thomaston Police Department.

Cole’s vehicle skidded into the path of an oncoming 2004 Nissan Sentra driven by Jean Lorenzen, 83, of Thomaston. She veered right, but could not avoid the head-on crash.

Janczura said Cole was not injured. He had a 3-year-old child in the car who suffered a bump on the head. Cole took the child to the hospital, Janczura said.

Lorenzen suffered a leg injury and bruising and abrasions from the air bag deploying. Each person involved was wearing a proper seat belt and the child was secured in a safety seat.

Both vehicles were a total loss, Janczura said.

Thomaston police, emergency medical services personnel and firefighters worked at the scene in bitter cold winter conditions. Knox County Sheriff’s Office personnel also assisted.
