The Midcoast Warriors Basketball Club will hold tryouts for open spots on their 13-and-under girls basketball team for seventh and eighth graders, as well as to gauge the interest for the formation of a 12U squad for sixth and seventh graders.

Tryouts for both teams will be Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Rockland District Middle School gymnasium.

Both teams will play from the middle of February to the middle of April when the Amateur Athletic Union championships are held April 9-11 in Saco. The squads will have two practices a week with each lasting about 1 1/2 hours. Games are Saturdays and/or Sundays.

Ron Hawkes, organizer of the teams, said there are five to six openings on the 13U squad and 12-13 positions available on a potential 12U team.

Hawkes said the goal of the Midcoast Warriors Basketball Club is to help players develop individual skills, improve their basketball intelligence and have fun meeting and playing with and against a new group of peers outside the school basketball team.

The cost to participate on one of the teams is $300 per player, which includes tournament fees and uniforms. Coaches, organizers and club directors are volunteers. All money raised by a team is spent only on that team. The cost of a tournament runs, on average, about $300 for four games. The local squads will play 20-25 games for the two age groups.
