Derek K. Leighton, 29, of Vinalhaven died Jan. 21, 2010, at his home. Born June 27, 1980, in Blue Hill, he was the son of David K. and Kim (Johanson) Leighton. He grew up in Massachusetts, spending summers in Blue Hill, a place that was always very special to him. In recent years, he lived in Vinalhaven where he worked as a sternman for local lobstermen. Derek was a very outgoing and caring person who loved his family and enjoyed hip-hop and nature. His sense of humor was second to none.

Derek will be greatly missed by his family and many special friends. He touched many lives in his 29 years and will always be loved and remembered.

He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Priscilla Leighton; his great-aunts and great-uncles, Mary and Harold Leighton, Hugh Leighton and Sylvia Black; and several cousins.

Derek is survived by his father, David K. Leighton of Vinalhaven; his mother, Kim Johanson of Cottonwood, Ariz.; his brother, Mark Leighton and his wife, Emma, of Massachusetts; his paternal grandfather, Sheldon Leighton of Blue Hill; his maternal grandparents, Dick Johanson and Beverly Erlandson of Massachusetts; his beloved fiancé, Carmen Olan of Vinalhaven; his aunts and uncles, Dana Leighton and his wife, Cathy, of Stockton Springs, Brian Leighton of Milbridge, Carol Doyle and her husband, Michael, of Tennessee, Kerry Johanson-Allard and her husband, Art, of Massachusetts, and Karen Johanson and her husband, Bob Mita, of Massachusetts; a special cousin, Arthur Leighton of Stockton Springs; and a special friend, Charlotte Goodhue of Vinalhaven.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Blue Hill Congregational Church. The Rev. Rob McCall will officiate.

A spring service will be announced by the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Camden.
