A man from Waldoboro was being treated for broken bones at a Bangor hospital after he was involved in an accident on Route 1 the morning of Jan. 26.

Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said Ryan Lawrence, 28, of Waldoboro was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he remained as of the afternoon of Jan. 26.

The second driver involved in the crash, 52-year-old Peter Stearns of Hermon, was transported to Waldo County General Hospital as a precautionary measure. LaHaye said Stearns was treated and released.

The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. in front of 148 West Main St., near the intersection with Cobb Road.

A Cobb Road resident whose driveway is on Route 1 said his grandson had been waiting for the school bus in the same location less than an hour before the crash.

The Jaws of Life unit from Belfast Ambulance Service was called to the scene to extricate Lawrence from his vehicle.

Route 1 traffic was rerouted for about 45 minutes.

LaHaye said both men were operating late model pickup trucks and were traveling in opposite directions on Route 1 when the collision occurred.

“They collided left front fender to left front fender,” said LaHaye.

LaHaye said the accident remains under investigation, but judging by the way the vehicles struck one another, one of the drivers may have veered over the center line.

Both vehicles were deemed a total loss.
