Tucked away off Route 17 in South Hope is a small christian school and attached to the church/private educational facility is a small gymnasium that is filled to the brim every time the school’s basketball or volleyball squads host athletic events.

And it is in that little space that a local youth athletic dynasty has fostered and continues to grow — without perhaps many outside of that small church community realizing it.

While it is easy to keep track of the wonderful accomplishments of the Midcoast’s successful public school athletic teams, gone virtually unnoticed are the efforts put forth each winter by the South Hope Christian School volleyball squad.

The team, coached by Fawn Adolphsen, is looking to become first team — including both volleyball and basketball — to ever win five consecutive Athletics For Christian Education League state title.

What are the odds of that happening later this winter? One would think pretty good when one considers the Royals are 9-0 this year, have won 82 straight matches and four straight state crowns — winning 73 consecutive matches en route to those first four state titles.

Now that is what one would call a sports dynasty.

The 2009-10 Royals include Alexandra Sukeforth, Savannah Adolphsen, Malyla Chadwick, Rachel Pease, Taylor Brown, Tanya Brown, Darcy Finnemore and Kaitlyn Kee.

The Royals’ latest victories came in a two-match sweep of visiting Coastal Christian School of Waldoboro Jan. 22. South Hope won 25-6 and 25-14. The Royals also won a third game that did not count because the best-of-three-game match had been decided.

In some of their recent matches, the Royals defeated host Wiscasset 25-13 and 25-8 Jan. 12, host Hartland 25-6 and 25-12 Jan. 8, visiting Wiscasset 25-14 and 25-15 Jan. 5, host Coastal Christian 25-8 and 25-13 earlier this season and host Madison 25-11 and 25-4 earlier in the campaign.

The Royals will compete in the playoffs in the coming weeks. The state championship matches are usually held in Skowhegan.

The CCS Ram players, coached by Bud Brown, who attended the Jan. 22 match with South Hope were Nona Harvey, Gina Harvey, Amanda Beck, Harmony Reed, Dorie Nicewonger, Emma Sorterup, Abby Cunningham, Alyssa Wood, Kelsey Knof, Olivia Cronkhite, Rachael Townsend, Annie Barbour, Christa Sorterup, Bernadette Lombardo, Cassie Townsend and Alexis Gleason,
