Our pet pick of the week is Sprite. Sprite is a handsome, longhaired adult black feline. He can usually be found lying atop the lobby counter, ready to greet you. He will give you a nudge hello and then repay your attention with a swat. He can be very charming when he wants to be. However, Sprite also has a feisty side, what we like to call catitude. But you can’t really blame him; he has been waiting for a home for nearly a year.

The stress of living in a shelter environment is harder on some than others. In Sprite’s case, it puts him a little on edge. In addition, black shelter cats and dogs are often overlooked for their more colorful and patterned counterparts when families are looking to adopt. So he has had to be very patient. Recently, Sprite was treated to some much deserved rest and relaxation away from the chaotic shelter environment with a solo stay in the shelter’s penthouse suite, also known as the director’s office. What a transformation! Sprite’s true and much more loving nature revealed itself. He became relaxed and affectionate and down right friendly. Gone was the twitchy tail, replaced by kisses and rubs providing a glimpse into the companion cat he could become if given a loving home that he doesn’t have to share with dozens of other cats. If you’re interested in Sprite, stop by the shelter. He is waiting for you.

We need your vote. Bangor Savings Foundation is giving a total of $100,000 to 68 local nonprofit organizations. The community gets to decide who is worthy and we are hoping that our supporters will vote for the Humane Society of Knox County. You can pick up an official ballot at Bangor Savings Bank or we’ve got them at the shelter too. If you’d rather do it online, just go to our Web site at hskcme.org and follow the link to vote for us. You will need to write us in under Midcoast region. Winning $5,000 will help us provide shelter, food, medical care, compassion and hope for the over 1,000 homeless and abandoned animals we will see this year. The deadline is March 2 so cast your vote. Tell your friends, family and co-workers to vote for HSKC — your community shelter that provides animal care services to 22 towns in Knox and Waldo counties. Thank you for your support.

Thank you to our friends at Pet Quarters in Rockland for donating a car load of food for the animals. We appreciate their support of our mission and our pets appreciate their full bellies. Speaking of filling bellies, join us Saturday, Feb. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Knox County Courthouse for Knox County Feed Our Friends Event. We will be there along with the Area Interfaith Outreach Food Pantry to accept donations of food, supplies and financial assistance for our two- and four-legged friends and to answer any questions about what we do. Don Carrigan will also be there along with Togus the Cat. For more information visit hskcme.org and follow the link.
