Virginia Lucille Watkinson died at a Boston hospital Jan. 22, 2010, from complications following heart surgery. Born in Rockland on July 10, 1925, she was the youngest of four children of Elmer and Grace Allen Witham.

Virginia attended Kents Hill School and was a 1944 graduate of Rockland High School. She was also a graduate of the New York School of Design. In New York, she met her future husband Thomas E. Watkinson. They were married in Rockland on April 19, 1947.

Her happiest times were spent on Wooden Ball Island. There she, her husband, and sons lobstered, hiked, picnicked, raised sheep, speared flounder, and read. She especially enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the island. After her children left home, she bought GI Joe’s hotdog stand, renaming it GI Mom’s. She ran it successfully for many years until her retirement.

Virginia was predeceased by her husband and her brothers, Edwin and Clayton Witham.

She is survived by her sons, Randal and his wife, Janet, Ronald and his wife, Margaret, Thomas “Terry” and his wife, Elizabeth, and Christy and his wife, Dawn, all of Owls Head; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Albright; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

An informal gathering of friends and relatives will be held Saturday, Jan. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home’s 104 Limerock reception facility.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice or a Haiti relief fund.
