The Camden Public Library will host an illustrated presentation by Ava Goodale, a birth doula, on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m. titled Journeys of a Doula. The talk is free and open to the public.

Goodale’s presentation will give a photographic tour from around the globe and throughout history on the role of childbirth support people, today called doulas. Referenced by indigenous tribes as the “ones who hold” and “she who raises her up,” Goodale will use these diverse cultures to show the critical importance of doulas today. Covering both the art and science, Goodale will also take a thorough look at studies showing improved outcomes at births with doulas present as well as how doulas activate the so-called “primal brain” during childbirth. The talk will interest even those who are not directly connected to childbirth, as Goodale looks at how birth is connected to adult and childhood health.

Goodale is a certified birth doula with Que Sera Sera Birth Services. She attends both home and hospital births. She hosts a monthly open house at the Maternal Wellness Center in Belfast, which will be held next on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information visit mainedoula.webs.com.
