A 19-year-old St. George man fired five shots from a 12-gauge shotgun into a Brewster Street home Jan. 17 before he went inside and shot himself, police said Jan. 19.

Joshua Greiner died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Rockland police.

Greiner went to the home and got into a verbal confrontation with a woman who was staying with friends at the Brewster Street home, said Detective Sgt. Chris Young. The nature of the dispute was not known.

The woman closed the door on Greiner, who then fired five shots into the door with the shotgun, according to police. The woman suffered small cuts and bruises to her hand when the doorknob exploded from the shotgun blasts. She also was grazed by some of the shotgun pellets.

Greiner then entered the house and shot himself in the kitchen.

The woman declined medical treatment.

The shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. on Jan. 17. Police received calls from eight to nine neighbors about shots being fired. Someone inside the residence also called police to report the shooting.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the response.
