The Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., will welcome Grammy Award-winning singer, guitarist and songwriter Ani DiFranco to its stage Saturday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. for an evening of folk and alternative rock.

A prolific artist, DiFranco has written hundreds of songs and released more than 20 albums during the course of her career. She has played thousands of shows, captured the imaginations of legions of followers and jammed with folkies, orchestras, rappers, rock ‘n’ roll hall-of-famers, jazz musicians, poets, pop superstars and storytellers.

“The chance to see Ani DiFranco in a small venue, and in an intimate setting like the Strand is a rare opportunity,” said Strand director Donna Daly. “We are honored that Ani choose to make a stop in Rockland!”

Fiercely independent, DiFranco bucked the major label system in the early 1990s, opting to release her music on her own Righteous Babe Records label. On her latest album, “Red Letter Year,” she takes more advantage of this freedom than ever before. Conceived, sculpted and refined over the course of two years – a lifetime compared to a typical DiFranco recording session – the album is an impeccably crafted, multi-layered sonic achievement which celebrates existence, professes love, and tackle’s thorny political issues with an infectious sense of glee. It is one of DiFranco’s most joyous records to date.

“I’ve got myself a new mantra. It says, don’t forget to have a good time,” she said.

The opening act is Gaby Moreno, winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. General Admission tickets are $52, available by calling 594-0070 weekdays from noon to 4 p.m.; online at rocklandstrand.com; or at the Strand Theatre walk up box office window daily from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A limited number of tickets will be released Saturday for walk up sales starting at 6:30 p.m.
