Cecil E. Prior, 94, of Loud’s Island died Jan. 14, 2010, at the Edgecomb Green.

Cecil was born Dec. 4, 1915, in Round Pond, the youngest child of Thomas and Lettie Hoffses Prior. He graduated from Lincoln Academy, Class of 1934. After graduation he went lobstering. In 1937 he took over the “mail run,” which meant he rowed to and from the mainland each day to retrieve the mail for the island post office. He continued this for more than 30 years. While living on Loud’s Island, Cecil farmed and used his boat Free Rider to transport people to and from the island, until he moved to the mainland year round in 1984. He was also a lobster buyer for Zahn’s and worked as a sawyer at Messina’s and North Country Wood Products.

In his later years Gramps enjoyed visiting with his friends at various local restaurants, Round Pond Harbor and John’s Bay Boat.

Cecil was a lifetime member of the Round Pond Odd Fellows.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Anderson Prior; his brother; Thomas; his sisters, Lois Anderson, Leah Hoyt and Dora Dolloff; and his nephew, Clayton “Bud” Dolloff.

He is survived by his grandsons, Michael of Bristol and Rex of Nobleboro; his great-grandsons, David and Jacob; and his close family friends, “daughter” Jan Stoddard and her son Patrick of Round Pond.

At Cecil’s request there will be no service; his remains will be scattered at Little Harbor with his wife.

The family is grateful to the Edgecomb Green staff for the compassionate and professional care that Gramps was given.

Arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Waldoboro.
