After a successful exploratory meeting that was met with great enthusiasm and encouragement, a second Aktion Club organizational meeting has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Conference Home on Summer Street in Rockland.

Representatives from the Kiwanis Club of Rockland and the Kiwanis New England District, along with those from group homes and service providers for disabled adults, met recently to discuss the start-up of a new Aktion Club to be based in the Midcoast.

Aktion Club is open to adults with disabilities who want to become community leaders and provide service to others. Among other benefits for members, Aktion Club helps build confidence and self-esteem, as well as leadership and decision-making skills.

With Kiwanis laying the groundwork, the support of those interested in creating networking, leadership and social skills building opportunities for disabled adults is important.

The next organizational meeting is open to the public. Family members and professional caregivers are encouraged to attend to help move the project forward.
