Third-grade students in teacher Margie Gerrish’s class were learning Monday to make abacuses at the South School.

Helping them with this project was teacher’s aide Joel Dempsey. The abacus is a calculating tool featuring sliding beads on a frame that dates back centuries. Dempsey said making them is useful in teaching youngsters place value in math class.

In other classrooms, students have been making winter decorations including snowflakes and snowmen.

In Roxanne Snow’s second-grade class, students have been studying the season of winter. “They have been reading books and writing stories with a winter theme,” Snow said in a written explanation. The students created a bulletin board festooned with original snowflake cutouts.
