The Midcoast Ice Cats, off to one of the best seasons in their brief history, experienced what one might call an up-and-down game Saturday night that ended with another satisfying win.

The Ice Cats, a cooperative club ice hockey team that includes student-athletes from a number of local high schools, stormed to 3-0 lead only to give up four unanswered goals to the visiting Lawrence jayvees of Fairfield Saturday to trail 4-3. However, the Ice Cats then scored three more goals to pull out a 6-4 win.

The Ice Cats, who play a jayvee schedule, improved to 6-2-1.

The Ice Cats received three goals from Kyle Hadyniak of Mount View and two goals from Ken Scheimreif of Medomak Valley en route to the win. Stephen Hand of Camden Hills added the other goal. Jacob Perry of Rockland and McKinley Schroeder of Belfast both had two assists, while Cal Robbins of Medomak Valley, Parker Spear of Rockland, Hand and Tyler Hadyniak of Mount View also added assists.

For Lawrence, Nick Marchesi, Tyler Blakney, Tyler Boudreau and Christian Carpenter all scored goals, while Dalton Stewart, Brian Wyman and Marchesi added assists.

The Ice Cats scored three goals in the first period before the Bulldogs scored two in the second and two more at the start of the third to make it 4-3. However, then the Ice Cats scored three third-period goals to cement the win.

The Ice Cats had 30 shots on goal and Lawrence 20. Ice Cat goalie Aaron Daniello of Rockland stopped 16-of-20 shots he faced.

The ‘Cats had a strong first period, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-5. Scheimreif netted his first goal (assisted by Perry and Spear). Hadyniak followed that with a goal to make it 2-0 (assisted by Schroeder), while Hand closed the scoring in the period (assisted by Robbins)

The period ended and it looked like the ‘Cats would roll to an easy victory, but the Bulldogs had some bite left in them.

The tide shifted and Lawrence dominated the second period outshooting Midcoast 12-8. Defensive breakdowns by the ‘Cats combined with the Bulldogs speed led to several quality scoring chances. Marchesi buried a shot past Daniello to start the ‘Dogs comeback, while Blakney (assisted by Stewart) made it a one-goal game heading into the final period.

Lawrence continued to ride the momentum and scored early in the opening moments of the third period from Boudreau (assisted by Wyman). Carpenter gave the Bulldogs the lead (assisted by Marchesi) and the ‘Cats were suddenly facing an uphill battle.

The ‘Cats tightened defensively and controlled the rest of the period, outshooting their opponent 12-3. Hadyniak scored his second goal (assisted by Spear) to tie the game 4-4.

Schreimreif scored the game-winner (assisted by Hand and Perry).

In the waning moments Lawrence pulled its goalie for an extra attacker but could not generate a quality scoring chance. Tyler Hadyniak of Mount View crossed the blue line staring at an undefended goal, but passed the puck to his brother Kyle Hadyniak, who completed his hat trick.

The ‘Cats take the ice again Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7:50 p.m. against Lewiston at MRC and Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4:30 p.m. against Gardiner.
