The Friends of the Thomaston Public Library presents a weekly series of films in Room 208 of the Thomaston Academy Building, 60 Main St./Route 1. The Friday night movies for January have a musical biographies theme. The second film of the series, “The Glenn Miller Story,” will be screened Friday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

“The Glenn Miller Story,” starring James Stewart in the title role, traces Miller’s rise from pit orchestra trombone player to leader of the most successful big band of his era, the early 1940s. June Allyson plays Miller’s wife, Helen, who learns the value of patience while Glenn searches relentlessly for “the sound” that will put him on top. Harry Morgan plays Miller’s sidekick, and musicians Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa pop up in cameos.

Admission is free but donations are appreciated. The Academy Building is handicapped accessible via an elevator off the parking lot. For more information, call the library at 354-2453. Doors will open at 6 p.m., when the Hallway Books book shop is open in the hallway of the first floor.
