Despite the recent snow storms, a number of artists made it to the downtown Tidemark Gallery to participate in “Exploration in Realism: Conceptual to Traditional,” a new show juried by Sam Cady of Friendship, artist and career instructor in the Master of Fine Arts Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

The gallery also credits to Rockland’s Caldbeck and Jonathan Frost galleries and to Cady himself for this and his many contributions to artists in general and to Midcoast artists in particular.

To say what this show is about, Cady said that image making is as essential as music making and storytelling and as broad as all the emotions and all the ideas we can conjure up. All forms of expression are valid if they are authentic – honest to the maker’s character, curiosity and experience and pursuant of their gifts and imagination.

“This show is a small sample of the variety of moods, observations, humors, imaginations and gifts of artists in this small part of the world. This kind of creativity is everywhere in the world and as you can see, it is robust, alive and well in Midcoast Maine. It enables us to see more fully, feel more fully, think more, appreciate more, laugh, ponder, love, empathize and be amazed,” he said.

From the rich and varied group of works submitted, Cady has chosen 43 paintings and drawings that seem to work together for this show. Artists represented are Jon Luoma, Bill Tomsa, Ian Bruce, Louise King, Katharina Keoughan, Barbara Sullivan, Debra Arter, Mat O’Donnell, Joseph Cousins, Scott Davis, K. Min, Jan Janville, Barbara Bean, David Cadbury, Alana VanDerwerker, Jean Kigel, Joel LeVasseur, Jan Janville, Liliana Thelander, Carole Sloane, Susan Corcoran, Judy Nixon, Dan Kirchoff, Jonathan Frost, David Bickmann, Will Wilkoff, Maryanne Storer, Dennis Pinette, Susan Corcoran, Matt Rota, Ralph Bush, Sue Dixson, Ralf Feyl, Nancy Wissemann-Widrig, Joyce Eames Steel and Phoebe Bly.

Tidemark Gallery also features work by its member artists and friends Audrey Bechler, Ralph Bush, Ardy Greatorex, Gregory Holmes, JoEl Pottery, Ann Makuck, Anne Wooster Metcalfe, Louise Price, Kariska Puchalski, Wayne Robbins, Patience Sampson and Carol Wiley.

“Exploration in Realism” is on display through Saturday, Jan. 30 at Tidemark Gallery, 902 Main St./Route 220. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
