Thomas C. McBride, M.D., 77, died Jan. 4, 2010, at his home in Camden after a brief illness.

Born in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 26, 1932, he was the son of Lawrence H. and Marion (Hickey) McBride. He was educated in Chicago schools and was awarded the Daniel Webster scholarship to attend Dartmouth College, graduating in 1953. A 1957 graduate of the University of Vermont Medical School, Dr. McBride did post-graduate training at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In 1959 he married Alice Marie Aho in Tenafly, N.J.

From 1959 to 1961 Dr. McBride served in the United States Public Health Service on an assignment in Hawaii. For the remainder of his career, he worked at the University of Massachusetts Health Services in Amherst as staff physician and medical director. Dr. McBride was also a professor of family and community medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Following the death of Mrs. McBride in 1996, Dr. McBride moved from Amherst to Camden to be near his daughter, Susan L. McBride and her family in 1997. During his retirement, Dr. McBride remained very active, bicycling, hiking the Camden Hills, attending Bay Chamber concerts, and traveling. In 2000, while on a trip to England and France, he met a special friend, Ann Brown.

He was predeceased by his wife, Alice A. McBride; and two brothers, Larry McBride and Donald McBride.

He is survived by his companion, Ann Brown of Kennebunk; three children, Tom C. McBride of Amherst, Mass., Peter A. McBride of Port Chester, N.Y., and Susan L. McBride and her husband, Christopher Richmond, of Camden; three grandchildren, Margaret, Carlton and Henry Richmond, all of Camden; a sister-in-law, Patricia McBride of Des Moines, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden. The Rev. John Rafter will officiate.
