A 23-year-old Union man remained behind bars Jan. 5 after police said he sexually assaulted four children, some almost on a daily basis over the past several years.
Benjamin Cook was arrested Dec. 31 by Knox County Detective Justin Twitchell on charges of gross sexual assault, sexual abuse of a minor and unlawful sexual contact.
An initial court appearance was held Jan. 4 and bail was set at $10,000 cash or $50,000 surety.
The case came to light when a parent of some of the children contacted the sheriff’s office to report that one child had revealed the abuse, according to a police report filed in 6th District Court in Rockland.
Cook later admitted to police that he had committed the offenses claimed by the children. The allegations include that he sexually abused the children. With some of the victims, the abuse occurred almost on a daily basis for the past five years.
Cook told investigators that he had been abused as a child and that he couldn’t stop himself. He told police he knew what he was doing was wrong, the police affidavit said.
