Carole M. Westervelt, 76, died unexpectedly Jan. 1, 2010, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, after a brief illness.

Born in Sayville, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of Carl and Meta Mading Lehmann. Educated in local schools, she was a graduate of Sayville High School and later graduated from Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass.

In June 1956 she married William P. Westervelt Jr. They made their home for many years in Bayport, Long Island, N.Y. Mrs. Westervelt later resided in St. Augustine, Fla., a few years before moving to Jensen Beach, Fla., where she resided until moving to Thomaston in 2006.

For many years, while living in Bayport, Mrs. Westervelt kept two Ocelot cats, Noah and Simba. In association with her love of those two pets, she was a longtime member of the Long Island Ocelot Club.

Since moving to Thomaston she was an active volunteer with the Humane Society of Knox County.

She loved antiquing, gardening, baking, cooking, knitting, and donating to sheltered cats and dogs. She particularly enjoyed helping anyone in need.

Her daughter and son-in-law remembered the joy that being together with family brought Mrs. Westervelt, as well as her love of flying. She was a member of the Bayport Flying Club.

She had many close friends in Maine, Long Island, Virginia and Florida.

She is survived by one son, William C. Westervelt of Florida; one daughter, Victoria C. Smith and her husband, Jerry, of Thomaston; as well as two grandsons, Schuyler W. Smith and Sloane W. Smith, both of Thomaston.

No services will be held at this time.
