Shirley Davis Brown, 72, died Dec. 25, 2009, at Windward Gardens in Camden.

Born on Vinalhaven on Dec. 15, 1937, she was one of six children of Stuart and Mae Brown Davis. She was a graduate of Vinalhaven High School.

On June 17, 1959, she married Phillips “Phip” Lakin Brown Jr. and relocated to North Haven where she lived until her retirement from the Maine State Ferry Service. She spent several years wintering in Umatilla, Fla., with many friends from her childhood years. During the summer months she resided in Rockland. She lived the majority of her life on the island of North Haven, where she raised her two sons, Carl and Wayne.

Shirley served on the board of the North Haven Foundation and the North Haven Community School, and also as selectwoman. During many of those years she was the ambulance attendant on the island, first with a program sponsored by the state of Maine and later by the town of North Haven. She was also a tax assessor for island residents for about 10 years. She had a passion for helping the elderly, and while a resident of North Haven she was an outreach worker helping many of the elder residents on the island. She loved to knit for her family and friends and was a wonderful cook, serving many meals made from scratch.

In 1989 she received the Jefferson Award in recognition of outstanding community activities from the American Institution for Public Service.

She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years; three brothers, Stuart Davis, Gordon Davis and Harold “Hinky” Davis; and a sister, Annette.

She is survived by her two sons, Carl P. Brown and his wife, Maria, of Brunswick and Wayne D. Brown and his wife, Melanie, of North Haven; two grandchildren, Cassandra Brown of Brunswick and Eric Cummitt of Hagerstown, Md.; and a brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Davis and his wife, Peggy, of Rockland.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at North Haven Baptist Church. The Rev. David Macy will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to North Haven Cares, 246 North Shore Road, North Haven, ME 04853; or Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Pleasant St., Rockland, ME 04841.
