Gladys Beatty Miller, 86, died Jan. 1, 2010, at her home after a brief illness. Born July 12, 1923, in Bladen County, N.C., she was the daughter of Henry and Gertrude Beatty.

On June 7, 1943, she earned her undergraduate degree from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and that same day married Howard L. Miller. In 1973 she earned a master’s of education from the University of South Carolina, further specializing in remedial reading.

Gladys enjoyed a lifelong interest in the enjoyment and study of classical music, particularly Mozart, Beethoven and Bach, and classical art. Most recently she served as a docent at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland.

With her husband, she traveled extensively throughout six continents, and was involved in church activities, her family, gardening, reading and study.

Besides her husband, Howard, of 66 years of Rockport, Mrs. Miller is survived by one son, the Rev. William Beatty Miller-Zurell and his wife, the Rev. Mary Miller-Zurell of Catonsville, Md.; one daughter, Elizabeth A. Miller of Tucker, Ga.; one sister, Dorothy Harte of Florida; four grandchildren, Shannon Rose Johnson of Columbia, S.C., D. Evan Johnson of Kennesaw, Ga., Daniel Beatty Miller of LaVergne, Tenn., and Robert Anthony Miller of Boone, N.C.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Thomaston. The Rev. Peter Jenks will officiate.
