Ashwood Waldorf School invites prospective parents to attend a guided tour through its grade school with an extended visit in the first grade on Wednesday, Jan. 13 from 8:15 to 10:30 a.m.

This is the first of five opportunities to visit the classrooms this winter and spring. Private tours can also be arranged by calling the school. The Walk Through the Grades provides an opportunity for adults to experience Ashwood’s educational program first-hand and see the newly constructed grade school building. Participants will see how the children begin their day and will witness the integration of art, movement and song with academics throughout the grades. The tour includes a curriculum overview, time in several grade school classes, a question and answer session with Ashwood School Director Jody Spanglet, and refreshments. Space is limited. To register, call the office at 236-8021. Ashwood has a rolling admissions policy, so prospective parents are encouraged to inquire with the school’s enrollment director any time by e-mailing enrollment@ashwoodwaldorf.org, visiting ashwoodwaldorf.org or calling the school.

The heart of the Waldorf approach is the conviction that education is an art. Its goal is to present life to the children in such a way that they are filled with wonder and enthusiasm. This demands that the presentation of subject matter, be it math, history, or physics, must be alive and speak to the child’s experience. To truly educate a child, the heart and will must be reached as well as the mind. The intention is not merely to instruct, but to inspire and motivate each child’s creative forces from within; to lead the child to a balanced development of clear and precise thought, a rich and healthy emotional life, and a developed power of will which allows worthy application of his or her thoughts and feelings to practical challenges in the world. Children pass through three basic stages of cognitive development and the Waldorf curriculum is designed to engage the abilities of the growing child during each of these stages. To learn more about the curriculum, attend the Walk Through the Grades or contact the school to make an appointment with the enrollment director.

Located on Park Street in Rockport, Ashwood Waldorf School is Midcoast Maine’s largest independent and accredited private school with over 100 students from 18 months through eighth grade. Parent/Child classes and the drop-off Toddler Program for children 18 months to 3 years old are also offered during the school year. The Waldorf curriculum is designed to ignite the child’s imagination, engage the will, and develop capacities for creative and independent thinking. Ashwood has had a presence in the Midcoast for nearly 25 years, enrolling children from Damariscotta to Belfast and beyond.
