Agnes R. Underhill, 95, died Dec. 22, 2009, at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Detroit, Maine, April 26, 1914, she was a daughter of Ellis L. and Ina (Young) Basford. Agnes grew up and attended school in Lincolnville. She married George H. Underhill Jr. in 1931 in Lincolnville. He died in 1956. For many years, Mrs. Underhill owned and operated a kennel specializing in small-breed dogs. She also worked as a housekeeper, raked blueberries, was an avid gardener and worked the family farm raising cattle until she was in her 80s. Mrs. Underhill was from the old school, remaining fiercely independent most of her life, and was not one to ever complain.

She was predeceased by her husband, George H. Underhill Jr.; two daughters, Doris Newman and Linda Mills; two sisters, Velmae Sherman and Angelia Basford; and three brothers, Emmuel, Ralph and Everett Basford.

She is survived by four children, Shirley Braley and her husband, Merle, of Livermore and Bonita Springs, Fla., Eva Botley of Lincolnville, George Underhill and his wife, Gypsie, of Camden and LeRoy Underhill and his wife, Carol, of Lincolnville; a sister, Irene Brookings, of Coopers Mills; a sister-in-law, Annie Basford, of Rockland; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces and a nephew.
