James M. “Pat” Paterson, 90, a lifelong resident of Tenants Harbor, died Dec. 20, 2009, at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Rockland on June 21, 1919, he was the son of Henry “Harry” and Maude C. Maxwell Paterson. Growing up in Tenants Harbor, he was educated in local schools and was a graduate of St. George High School.

On June 15, 1940, he married Doris R. Wood at the Tenants Harbor Baptist Church Parsonage.

From May 10, 1944, to May 14, 1946, he served with Company C, 334th Engineers Regiment. At the time of his discharge from active duty, Pat had earned the rank of staff sergeant.

Throughout his career as a machinist, he worked first at Snow’s Shipyard in Rockland, later with Hocking Granite at Clark Island in St. George, and, for more than 30 years, with Dragon Cement Products in Thomaston.

He was a former member of Eureka Lodge of Masons No. 84 in Tenants Harbor, and a longtime member of Tenants Harbor Baptist Church.

Pat loved working in the woods on his woodlots. Other pastimes he enjoyed were gardening and woodworking. He was a devoted Red Sox fan.

Other than his parents, Pat was predeceased by one son, John L. Paterson; and a sister, Doris Havener.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years of Tenants Harbor; two nieces, Maxine Bartlett of Rockland and Cheryl Havener of Florida; and a nephew, Richard Havener of Turner.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. at Tenants Harbor Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Hickey will officiate. Interment will be in Seaside Cemetery in Tenants Harbor.
