Perry Howard, a native of Rockland, died at his home in Baton Rouge, La., on Nov. 19, 2009.

He was a graduate of Rockland High School, Harvard College and Louisiana State University, where he received a Ph.D. in 1951.

He served in World War II in the Pacific for almost three years. In the last 60 years he lived in the deep South, teaching at various universities before returning to LSU to teach sociology for 25 years until his retirement in 1988.

He was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Howard.

He is survived by his wife; a son; a daughter; five grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Emery Howard; and a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Grant.
