Philip R. Mank, 56, died Dec. 14, 2009, at his home following an extended battle with cancer.

Born in Camden, Sept. 14, 1953, he was the son of Arnold L. and Donna Edmunds Drinkwater.

Raised in the Midcoast, he was educated in local schools. For most of his career, Phil worked as a commercial fisherman, lobstering, scalloping and urchin diving. More recently he worked as a mechanic. On Oct. 15, 1988, he married Linda M. Sagar in Athens, where they resided a few years before returning to the Midcoast area.

He has been an active, devoted volunteer with Special Olympics and at one time, with his wife, coached the Coastal Schooners Special Olympics team. Phil was remembered by his family as a gentle man, who loved his children, grandchildren and his cat, Sam. He was always willing to help anyone in need.

He particularly enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing. He affectionately referred to his wife as “Little Bear.” Phil enjoyed special friendships with Linda Seelye, Bub Morse, Steve Gracie, Wally Metcalf, Pastor Wally and Pastor Mike. He was also particularly grateful for the compassionate care and friendship afforded him by Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice nurses, Larry and Marti, during recent days.

Besides his parents of South Thomaston, Phil is survived by his wife, Linda of Warren; two daughters, Stephanie Racine and her husband, John of Scituate, R.I., and Stacy Secord and her husband, Brian of Cushing; one son, Charles “Chuck” Peterson of Cushing; nine grandchildren, Jonathan, Nichole, Nia, Zachary, Jenny, Andrew, Julienne, Lillian and Addyson; a brother-in-law, Douglas Sagar and his wife, Jenny of New Hampshire; a nephew, Rob Haskell; and adopted family members, Shirley Poulin, Andrea Flanders of Cushing, Beth McCann of Bucksport, and DeDe and Steven Johnson of Blue Hill.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held Thursday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. at Grace Bible Fellowship, 30 Sherer Lane in Rockland.
