I grew up in Tucson, Arizona, so moving to Maine in 1991 (with stops in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Illinois) was an amazing and wonderful change. When I was much younger, walking the neighborhoods close to my home, I always wondered at the cookie-cutter sameness of most of the homes. Where were the two story houses? Where was the interesting architecture? I remembered fondly my grandparents’ home in Illinois, an old farmhouse with two floors, wonderful round windows and beautiful woodwork. I wanted that house or something very much like that. My dream finally came true when in 1999, my husband and I bought a lovely New Englander in Camden Village. Before moving to Camden, we spent a few years in Waterville where we both worked at Colby College. Yearning to be near the coast, we moved here when our two daughters went away to school. |
