Youthful North Haven few in numbers, ready for 'fun' campaign
North Haven — The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 North Haven Community School girls basketball team:
Coach/years coached current team: Roman Cooper, 14th year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 3-11, 12th in Western Class D. The Hawks did not qualify for the playoffs.
Roster: Sophomore Kennedy Cooper (5-foot-6-inch forward); freshmen Gina MacDonald (5-8 forward), Samantha Sparhawk (5-7 forward), Mya Goodell (5-4 guard), Maddie Hallowell (5-7 guard) and Adrianna Ames (5-5 guard); and eighth-grader Ashlyn Ames (5-4 guard).
Outlook: To say this year will be a challenge for the Hawks would be an understatement.
Carrying only seven players, the oldest of which is a sophomore, North Haven will be battling every game not only to keep up with opponent's talented underclassmen, but to not run out of gas on the court.
Playing time will not be an issue," said Cooper. "We've got one [substitute] for the forwards and one sub for the guards."
"It's going to be a big challenge this year," he said. "They're so young, but the good thing is they are starting in a position this year much farther ahead then they were last year in terms of ability and their basketball knowledge."
The Hawks work hard on defense, while Cooper said the team's Achilles' heel will be scoring. Hallowell, who "plays basketball 24-7," will get plenty of opportunities to score for North Haven.
While the Hawks will take their lumps this season, Cooper said, "They're just going to enjoy [the experience]."
"They're realists, but they're just going to give it everything they've got."
