Young Oceanside looks to pin down new mat program
Rockland — The following is a synopsis of the 2012-13 Oceanside High School wrestling team:
Coach/years coached current team: Jason Yates, first year.
Last year's record/playoff information: This is Oceanside's first season as a club sport, though they are eligible to compete for both team and individual conference, regional and state championships.
Roster: Senior Travis Stone (196 pounds); junior Tony Baudanza (160); sophomores Brandon Davis (111) and Alex Rackliffe (237); and freshmen Autumn Keene (149), Thomas Curtis (229), Dallas Ball (118) and Jonathan Robishaw (105).
Outlook: With limited student-athletes, it has been a tough start for the program, given the fact the team typically has to forfeit many weight classes to opponents. But that takes nothing away from the talent on the mat, which the Mariners have.
Ball and Robishaw, both freshmen, are the most seasoned of the Oceanside wrestlers, after having thrived at the middle school program last year. Yates also is impressed with Stone and Baudanza, both of whom are coming along nicely early in the season.
"[The wrestlers] really working hard and I think toward the end of the year we're really going to turn it up and have some success," said Yates. "As long as they're physical and aggressive, the moves will come."
Yates stressed the team continues to look to add wrestlers with the season still relatively young.
