YMCA child care center recognized for healthy eating, active living
Rockport — The Penobscot Bay YMCA Childcare Center was recently recognized as a silver level site of distinction from Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 for implementing healthy eating and active living strategies into their childcare setting.
This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of the Pen Bay Y Childcare Center for increasing the health and well-being of children in their care through the promotion of the Let’s Go! message for the past two years through multiple activities (five or more fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of recreational screen time; one hour or more of physical activity and no sugary drinks).
A few of the opportunities the Pen Bay Y Childcare Center has offered includes swimming classes, making a variety of healthy snacks available like fruits and vegetables and milk on a weekly basis, participating in healthy cooking projects with the children and providing healthy celebratory suggestions to parents as an alternative to sweet treats.
Let’s Go! Knox County, which is based at Pen Bay Healthcare, has collaborated with the Pen Bay YMCA and the childcare center on several occasions during the past year, including Healthy Kids Day and provided a countywide training for childcare providers.
On Oct. 20, Let’s Go! Knox County will again partner with the Pen Bay YMCA for its open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Start the day off with the family friendly Pumpkin 5K Walk at 8:30 a.m. Children and their families will be also able to participate in dance classes for all ages, try their hand at gymnastics during open gym, learn more about the childcare program (and have fun in the bounce house at the same time), plus check out their therapy pool (with waterslides!).
Let’s Go! is a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program that focuses on increasing physical activity and healthy eating for children birth to 18 years old through policy and environmental change.
