Yachtsmen sail past host Mariners in gridiron clash
Rockland — Storm Covens ran for three first-quarter touchdowns on jaunts of 24, 4 and 9 yards as the Falmouth Yachtsmen sailed past the host Oceanside Mariners 55-6 on Friday night, Sept. 27 in a high school football game at Wasgatt Field.
Additionally, Falmouth quarterback Noah Nelson tossed two scoring passes to Justin Rogers and one to tight end Matt Edmonds for 19 yards.
The Yachtsmen (3-1) gained 348 yards on the ground with 11 different ball carriers, led by Covens with 87 yards on 13 carries and Tyler Rolfe with 96 yards on 12 carries. Nelson was 4-of-7 passing for 52 yards and three TDs.
Preston Spear scored the lone touchdown for Oceanside (0-4) on a 53-yard run to begin the fourth quarter. Henry Berry had two carries for 70 yards for the hosts.
The Mariners finished with 211 yards on the ground on 30 carries, keyed by Spear with 104 yards on nine carries and one TD, Berry with 70 yards on two carries, Hunter Grindle 19 yards on 12 carries, Cole Chase 18 yards on one carry and Gage Robinson seven yards on two carries.
Mariner quarterback Grindle was 5-of-14 passing for 29 yards passing.
Oceanside's Tom Curtis blocked a punt just before the first half, but the Mariner drive stalled on a fumble.
Falmouth scored 21 points in both the first and third quarters and 13 in the second. Oceanside tallied its six points in the fourth stanza.
The Mariners have been outscored 194-36 by Western Class B opponents this fall.
In the Maine Principals' Association Crabtree Point Standings for Western Class B, Oceanside (0-4, 53.1250 points) is tied for 10th with Gorham (0-4), while Kennebunk (4-0, 153.1250 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
