Our pet pick of the week is Kenny, a 7-year-old Chihuahua mix. Kenny is a recent graduate of our K9 Corrections program, where he lived and was trained 24/7 by inmate/handlers at the Maine State Prison.

This 15-pound sprite is a very loving and loyal dog. Once he gets to know you, he will be your constant companion. Kenny can be reserved and protective when meeting new people. New introductions should be done slowly. He played well with the other dogs in the prison program; however, he is not trustworthy around cats and would do well in a quiet home without the noise and activity of children. Once bonded, Kenny loves to be held. He will walk right by your side, is house-broken and enjoys a good bath. If you're looking for a loyal companion and are willing to be patient and respect his boundaries, Kenny will reward you with love and devotion.

A special thank-you to the 'Keag Store in South Thomaston for donating hundreds of hotdogs and buns to our 2016 Whisker Walk and Family Fun Day! The hotdogs and buns helped us raise funds at the Whisker Walk, and have also helped us raise $133 towards our low-cost spay and neuter program last Friday at the "Save a Cat, Eat a Dog" fundraiser. Thank you, 'Keag Store, for your generosity and support! We are lucky to have such a kind community!

Did you know that pets can get pregnant as young as 4 months old? Our spay and neuter program provides financial assistance to pet owners from the 20 communities we serve for the cost of spaying and neutering surgeries for their pets to help stop unwanted litters. If you need assistance in getting your pet "fixed," contact the shelter at 594-2200 and speak with a staff member to receive a voucher to help defray the cost of the surgery. If you'd like to support this program with a gift, visit our website at hskcme.org or send a check to PMHS POB1294 Rockland, ME 04841 with "Spay/Neuter" in the memo line.

Mark your calendars for the 37th annual Festival of Lights Craft Show Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Elks Lodge in Rockland. It's one of the biggest holiday, local arts and crafts events in the mid coast.  We have a few vendor tables available, but they are going fast. For more information, contact Anna at events@hskcme.org or 691-4930.

Wish list: Canned dog food, canned cat food, paper towels, large black garbage bags, hand soap, laundry detergent. Gift certificates to Wal-Mart, Staples, Amazon and other local businesses are also a great help. Thanks for your support.
