Windjammers, Yachtsmen, Capers serve shutouts in preseason matchesAllen Insurance and Financial Challenge in 15th year at MRC
Rockport — The 15th annual Allen Insurance and Financial High School Tennis Challenge has three of the top high school boys tennis squads in the state square off each April — a trend that continued on Friday, April 7 at the Midcoast Recreation Center, with host Camden Hills, Cape Elizabeth and Falmouth.
All three matches, played on the indoor courts at MRC, were lopsided and ended in 5-0 decisions as the Yachtsmen went 2-0, the Windjammers 1-1 and the Capers 0-2.
The Windjammers are the defending state Class B champions, as they bested the Capers last season. The squads have tangled for the state title each of the last three years, as the Capers won in 2014 and 2015.
The Yachtsmen also won state Class A titles in 2014 and 2015 before falling in the Class A South regional championship last season to Thornton Academy of Saco.
Camden Hills coach Noah Capetta said he was not surprised by the dominance of the Yachtsmen as they have three of the top seven tennis players in the state in Nick Forester, Alex Klemperer and Peter Stegemann — though he feels his squad will be strong enough to make another deep playoff run in 2017.
The following is a breakdown of the three preseason matches:
