Windjammers should be in state championship discussion
Rockport — The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Camden Hills Regional High School golf team:
Coach/years coached current team: Mark Wallace, 11th year.
Last year's record/playoff information: Fourth (332) in the state Class B team championships and second (328) at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B qualifier. Wickenden and Starbird also qualified for the schoolboy individual championships.
Roster: Seniors Jack Orne and San Cloyd; juniors Daulton Wickenden, Drew Long, Drew Holt, Jared Garske, Austin Pohlman, Quinn Holt, Ryan Pierce and Oliver Bianchi; sophomores Julian Starbird and Alex Forcillo; and freshmen Louis Laurita and Connor Russell.
Known graduation loss: Eddie Socker.
Significant impact golfers: Wickenden, Starbird, Drew Holt, Long and Garske.
Team strengths: Experience and youth.
Team goals: To compete for top finishes at both the KVAC qualifier and state Class B team championships.
Top league opponents: Unknown.
Outlook: The Windjammers return many starters from last year’s squad, including the team’s top four golfers. Camden Hills also was fortunate to have Garske transfer from Wisconsin, who Wallace said will fill “the ever important fifth spot” in the lineup.
Wickenden, who qualified for the schoolboy individual championships for the second straight year last fall, remains atop the team’s ladder, though the veteran coach said “all of last year’s top four will be fighting it out amongst themselves during season practices to work up the ladder.”
For example, Long has been the low nine-hole scorer in the team's first two matches.
Given the fact that many of the squads that finished above Camden Hills in both the qualifier and state championships last year lost key golfers to graduation, the sky could be the limit for this year’s Windjammers, including even a legitimate swing at the state title.
“Overall, we are looking forward to a fun and successful regular season,” said Wallace. “The team as a whole sees a common vision and remains steadfast in working on their games to reach their goals for the season.”
