Windjammers, Panthers net court wins to usher in campaign

Oceanside downed by Camden Hills, Medomak Valley upends Maine Central Institute

The Midcoast high school tennis seasons swung in on Thursday, April 13 — including for Camden Hills of Rockport, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston and Medomak Valley of Waldoboro — in a scenario that proved eventful for the Windjammers and Panthers.

The Windjammers and Mariners squared off on the courts as the Camden Hills boys posted a 5-0 win in Rockland and the Camden Hills girls a 4-1 victory in Rockport.

The Camden Hills boys are the defending state Class B champions, while the girls are the defending Class B North titlists.

The Panther squads also picked up home victories over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield as the girls prevailed 4-1 and the boys 5-0.

Girls tennis

Camden Hills 4, Oceanside 1

At Rockport April 13, the defending Class B North champions swung past the rival Mariners to begin the campaign.

The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were: In singles, Naomi Landry beat Gabby Simmons, 6-4, 6-3; Sophia Landry beat Molly Davis, 6-2, 6-1; and Kelsie Merrill lost to Cassidy Boynton, 2-6, 7-5, 5-7.

In doubles, Charlotte Messer and Claire Pierce beat Erin Dugan and Julia Bartlett, 6-0, 6-1; and Chloe Fordyce and Ella Pierce beat Emma Lee and Meredith Mitchell, 6-0, 6-2.

Medomak Valley 4, Maine Central Institute 1

At Waldoboro April 13, the Panthers prowled past the Huskies en route to victory. The teams played pro-set matches.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Maggie Ryan lost to Linda Vrbova, 6-8; Hannah Smith beat Autumn Maynard, 8-0; and Jessie Hugh beat Cassidy Hamm, 8-3.

In doubles, Molly Taylor and Claire Bourett beat Jettah Files and Megan Farias, 8-0; and Serena Poland and Katie Ryan beat Jarica Wiles and Makayla Guerette, 8-1.

Boys tennis

Camden Hills 5, Oceanside 0

At Rockland April 13, the defending state Class B champs made quick work of the host Mariners en route to a lopsided win.

The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were: In singles, Colby Arau beat Abe LeMole, 6-1, 6-1; Matt Morse beat Carter Fogarty, 6-0, 6-0; and Cooper Russell beat Mitchell DelFrate, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Noah Heidorn and Henry Cooper beat Elliot Spear and Ben Willey, 6-0, 6-0; and Simon Fedarko and Charlie O’Brien beat Josh Peaco and Nick Upham, 6-1, 6-0.

Medomak Valley 5, Maine Central Institute 0

At Waldoboro April 13, the Panthers blanked the Huskies and netted their first win of the new season. The teams played pr- set matches.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Richard Kinney beat Xabier Fresno, 8-2; Kyle Donlin beat Richard Hallowell, 8-4; and Quinn Ashmore beat Jinrey Ping, 8-3.

In doubles, Casey Libby and Greg Wadsworth beat Ethan Varney and Harry Van, 8-1; and Amos Hinkley and Alec Coughlin beat Harry Hong and Frankie Chen, 8-1.

Additionally, Medomak Valley hosted Boothbay Region in a preseason match on Tuesday, April 11, as the Panthers came up short in a 3-2 loss.

The individual results, with Medomak Valley players listed first, were: In singles, Richard Kinney lost to Duncan Drapeau, 1-6, 6-7 (4-7); Kyle Donlin lost to Dima Gosselin, 2-6, 6-4 (6-8), and Quinn Ashmore lost to Riley Spear, 4-6, 2-6.

In doubles, Casey Libby and Greg Wadsworth beat Griffin Kane and Rowam Kristan, 6-2, 6-1; and Amos Hinkley and Alec Coughlin beat Jacob Leonard and Sam Betts, 6-1, 6-4.

The positions these players are in while playing are going to take their toll, quickly, especially to wrists.  Extraordinarily awkward positions, odd weight balance, grasp, etc.  So many with the left arm bent in awkward position, which don't reflect actual physical difficulties, I trust.
