Windjammers ninth at prestigious Spartan tournamentFormerly the Redskin Invitational, event draws top teams from New England
Sanford — New name or not, the annual Spartan Wrestling Tournament Jan. 4-5 at Sanford High School was business as usual for the Camden Hills.
The Windjammers placed ninth among 23 teams at the tournament — formerly named the Redskin Invitational Tournament — and fifth among Maine schools.
The tournament underwent a name change this year when Sanford High School changed its mascot from the Redskins to the Spartans in June.
The Windjammers were led by fifth-place finishes from James Archer, Chris Weiss, Connor Winchenbach and Jared Gilbert, while also getting a sixth-place finish from Eli Smith.
The team scores were: Timberlane of Plaistow, N.H., 265.5; Danbury of Connecticut, 248.5; Marshwood of Eliot, 181.5; Massabesic of Waterboro, 153; Cumberland of Rhode Island, 110.5; Tyngsboro of Massachusetts, 106; Timberlane "B", 91.5; Belfast, 74; Camden Hills, 72.5; York, 70; North Providence of Rhode Island, 65.5; Sanford, 61; Bonny Eagle of Standish, 59; Biddeford, 50; Fryeburg Academy, 42; Portland, 39; Mountain Valley of Rumford, 35; Noble of Berwick, 19; Lisbon of Lisbon Falls, 13; Scarborough, 6; Marshwood "B", 4; North Smithfield of Rhode Island, 3; and Belfast "B", 3.
The individual Camden Hills results, with Windjammers listed first, included:
106 pounds — Zach Annis beat Nicole Burgess, MtV, 7-2; was pinned by Tyler Fitzpatrick, Timb "A", at 3:39; and lost to Patrick Castricone, Timb "B", 9-2.
113 pounds — Archer beat Jake Sheehan, Timb "B", at 1:06; was pinned by Chris Bryant, Danb, at 2:25; pinned J.D. Martin, Lis, at 2:41; pinned Mike Provencher, MtV, at 2:04; lost by major decision to Elliot Allen, Marsh, 8-0; and pinned Alex Roy, Tyng, at 1:25. Archer finished fifth.
120 pounds — John Underhill was pinned by Kris Nordby, Cumb, at 0:40; and lost to Joe Jerez, North Prov., 12-10 in overtime.
126 pounds — Weiss won by technical fall over Ashley Patton, Lis, 16-0; pinned Jake Kappler, Timb "B", at 3:30; was pinned by Ryan Peters, Timb "A", 1:19; lost to Frank Callace, Danb, 7-4; and won by forfeit over Brandon Gill, MtV. Weiss finished fifth.
138 pounds — Winchenbach pinned Jack Bouchard, York, at 1:27; beat Zac Richard, Mass, 3-1; lost to Brent Waterman, Bel, 5-0; lost to Nick Janes, Marsh, 4-1; and beat Hunter Day, Frye, 6-1. Winchenbach finished fifth.
152 pounds — Smith beat Andrew Boisvert, York, 8-3; lost by technical fall to Cody Hughes, Marsh, 18-1; pinned Tim LaRock, Noble, at 1:54; pinned James Gagnon, North Prov., at 4:34; lost to Chase Eldredge, San, 10-5; and lost to Ryan Collins, Timb. "B", 1-0. Smith finished sixth.
160 pounds — Wyatt Parra lost by technical fall to Kevin Mulligan, North Prov., 16-1; beat John Capella, Bel, 8-4; and was pinned by Chris Pagliccia, Timb "A", at 3:28.
170 pounds — Gilbert pinned Joseph Babera, Scar, at 1:30; beat Chris Hayes, Cumb., 7-2; was pinned by Luke Howarth, Marsh, at 1:35; lost by major decision to Jake Gallagher, Tyngs, 14-4; and pinned Malcolm Henry, Port, at 1:49. Glbert finished fifth.

195 pounds — Bryan Clement lost to Andy Martel, BE, 10-3; received a bye; and was pinned by Wyatt Roberts, Bel, at 3:30.
285 pounds — Kaylo Littlejohn received a first-round bye; was pinned by Zach Stewart, Timb, at 1:37; pinned Zack Courcy, San, at 4:01; and lost to Jacob Zenga, Noble, 10-6.
